About the World Golf Index:

The “WORLD GOLF INDEX” is a multi tour performance index based on top ten finishes from each major professional golf tour.

The objective of the World Golf Index is to identify the best professional golfers in the world whether they are men, women, or seniors, by providing a performance comparison of all major professional golfers while mostly competing against their peers on their respective home tour, and also while crossing over and competing in “official” professional golf events on other major tours.

How the World Golf Index works:

To earn points and be included in the World Golf Index point standings, a professional or amateur golfer must achieve a “top ten” finish in an “official” professional golf event on a "major" professional golf tour.
A qualifying “official” professional golf event is an event designated an “official money event” by, and included on the “official tour schedule” of a "major" professional golf tour. (The World Golf Index is an individual performance comparison and therefore, team, twosome, and other special events with fields of less than 20 professionals, do not qualify).
There are currently 4 "major" professional golf tours, being the PGA Tour, European Tour, Champions Tour, and the LPGA Tour.

A qualifying "major" professional golf tour is one that includes official R&A and USGA "major" professional golf events on its official tour schedule, and has an event purse average of more than one million US dollars.

World Golf Index (WGI) Points, Ranking, and Current Standings:

WGI “current standings” of individual points totals are ranked in descending order commencing with the most points earned in the most current 52 week period prior to and including the most recent “official” event completed.

WGI points are awarded upon the completion of “official” events according to the following point schedule:

  55 + (50 + 25) Bonus Points = 130

(Ties are broken first by point average, and if still tied, then by retrogression of highest finish)
(For events included on both the PGA and European Tour official schedules, points are awarded as a PGA Tour event only)

The World Golf Index is based on a simple point system which provides a clear and interesting comparison of professional golfers’ performances. It is also deliberately designed to identify which professional golfer has the best season.
